Personality:
Sumner is a bit of a softy when it comes to trainers and actually really enjoys the thrill of the battle as well as watching the trainers' enthusiasm in the gym. He thinks of himself as a kind of trainer trainer; or a gym leader that is genuinely interested in watching those who leave his gym learn and grow the with experience of his defeat. However-- he is not easily bested. Something that is known far and wide is that the leader of the Fuchsia gym is very competitive. While he strives to build relationships with trainers and make a lasting impression, he is not a push over. If a trainer wants the Balance Badge, they are in for the fight of their life.
This quality also extends beyond Pokemon battles and into Sumner's personal life. He is competitive by nature, especially to highbloods. Sumner has actually gotten into trouble with the league one more than one occasion for being a bit harder on highbloods than lowbloods or humans. It isn't rare for him to use his stronger Pokemon against highbloods and weaker ones against lowbloods, despite the danger this causes to the integrity and continued operation of his gym.
Despite the difficulty of his gym, Sumner remains popular among young trainers for his kindness and gentle nature outside of battle. After a trainer is defeated, he will often sit down with them and explain what they did wrong, encouraging them to rest and heal their Pokemon as well as do a bit of training before coming back to challenge him again. Outside of his gym leader duties, he opens his gym up for training on weekends, offering lessons in the art of battling and caring for Pokemon. These lessons are free and open to anyone willing to come and listen.
When he is not at his gym or working with trainers, Sumner will often take his Pokemon out for a long walk through the woods and is known to play with them. Other gym leaders tend to find him irresponsible and childish, but it doesn't seem to bother Sumner, seeing as over the years, he hasn't changed a bit.
